How do you use Bournville?

• I live in the area

Thinking about future improvements, what are the current issues in the area?

• Hard to cross the road

• Speeding or dangerous driving

• Parking or driving on the pavement

How can these be improved?

• Parking restrictions

Do you have any comments about the temporary changes made last year?

I don't think they address the actual problem. The problem is not that we need more pedestrian areas, we just need to be able to use the ones that we do have. This is what the Birmingham city council has to say about parking: "Inconsiderate parking Any vehicle may be parked on a public road where there are no restrictions, even if this is outside your property. Where a vehicle has been parked inconsiderately, as opposed to illegally, we are unable to take any action. It is not illegal for vehicles to: park in turning circles park immediately before or after a dropped kerb park opposite a dropped kerb or driveway entrance take up too much space park in other inconsiderate ways." There are no sanctions about cars being parked in pedestrian areas, if pavements were kept safe and free from vehicles then there would be no need to close roads to make space for people to walk.

Do you have any other ideas or suggestions?

Please address inconsiderate parking it should not be 'ok' to park on the pavement.

How do you use Bournville?

• I live in the area

• I have a child at school/nursery in the area

Do you have any comments about the temporary changes made last year?

I approve in principle with the changes, however currently all the traffic from Franklin road seems to be just diverted to Beaumont, Mary Vale or Bournville lane. Crossing Bournville Lane in particular is very hazardous with the children on our walk to school.

Thinking about future improvements, what are the current issues in the area?

• Too much traffic

• Speeding or dangerous driving

• Hard to cross the road

How can these be improved?

• Plants/green areas

• Traffic calming

• Parking restrictions

Large speed bumps on Beaumont road would be good. Since it is too narrow for two cars to pass, non-residents speed down the road at outrageous speeds. more speed bumps in general, without disrupting buses or emergency vehicles. A safe crossing point on Bournville Lane, somewhere between Selly Oak Rd and Beech Rd, would be very good. Here cars travel fast and there isn’t really a safe point with cross with ample view each way. This road is crossed by hundreds each morning and afternoon on the way to schools all round the area.

Measures must address fundamental issues: reducing volume of traffic; reducing speed of vehicles; improving pedestrian safety; prevention of through traffic of certain size of vehicles e.g. HGV, 7.5T

Do you have any comments about the temporary changes made last year?

We are positive about all efforts to make roads safer and quieter, which are especially important in the residential areas of Bournville where there are so many families with children walking to and from school, and around the local area to access amenities. We are therefore also extremely disappointed and frustrated that to date, nothing has been done to address the concerns and wishes of our residents’ group on Mary Vale Road. Something must be done in the next phase of this project. With the steps taken last year by BCC, the road has grown increasingly busy as COVID restrictions come to an end. The decision to keep the 30mph limit and not to reduce it to 20mph makes no sense and vehicles are passing through the road at far too high a speed, presenting a danger to all. With cars parked back-to-back either side of the road there are many areas along the road from which, for example, a child could step out. It is not a safe area for pedestrians at present. Our residents’ campaign has made very clear our wishes for a range of interventions including lower speed limits, restrictions on access to the road, introduction of safer spaces for cycling, and steps to prevent our road being used as a cut through, for access to and from main roads e.g. around Stirchley. Something must be done in the next phase.

Bournville Whilst I applaud the aim of Places for People, I am concerned about the impact that some of the measures are having on the western end of Mary Vale Road. As one of the few local 30mph roads, traffic continues to increase in volume and speed. The latter has also been exacerbated by the inappropriate street lighting. Whilst the lighting has indeed made walking on the pavement safer, it gives something of a 'highway' feel, which appears to be encouraging higher speeds. Also, I am somewhat dismayed by the lack of response to the efforts of the local residents committee. In particular the lack of response to the well supported petition.

The Franklin road closure had been excellent. I used to drive for small journeys like visiting the shops, but since the closure I only ever walk or cycle now. The road is far nicer to live on too, much quieter and less pollution. Thank you for this change.

There needs to be a crossing/island at the end of Franklin road/watford road as it is very dangerous.
