A45 pop-up cycle lane

1/2

This page is now closed for feedback. Details on further development of this scheme through the Active Travel Fund programme in 2021 can be found here .

This scheme was delivered on a temporary trial basis in 2020, and we are reviewing whether any of these measures should be modified or made more permanent . If you have any questions, please email connected@birmingham.gov.uk.

City centre to Small Heath (A45 corridor)

We are creating a temporary ‘pop-up’ cycle route along quiet streets and traffic-free paths to provide a safer parallel route to the A45 between the city centre (Bordesley Circus) and Small Heath.

Measures will include:

  • Cycle contraflow lanes and one-way traffic loop to provide safer connections for cycling between Bordesley Middleway and Bradford Street
  • Shared use footway/ cycle track along Bordesley Middleway
  • Connections with existing toucan crossing and Stratford Road parallel cycle route
  • Proposed shared use footway/cycle track on Small Heath Highway (Coventry Road to Bolton Road) along with construction of new footway near railway bridge and footway widening under the bridge
  • Two-way segregated cycle routes on Bolton Road & Byron Road through reallocation of road space to reduce conflicts between pedestrians, cycles and motor vehicles
  • Shared use footway/ cycle track on Coventry Road (between Tennyson Road and Heybarnes Circus)
  • Connections with existing Cole Valley cycling & walking route at Heybarnes Circus
  • Please note this scheme is being delivered on a temporary trial basis for the next few months, with the potential for these measures to be made more permanent as part of the Birmingham Walking & Cycling Strategy & Infrastructure Plan .

Discussions are also taking place with Transport for West Midlands to integrate this work with Sprint bus rapid transit proposals in the same corridor.
